1. OS: The software is made for Linux systems. Windows is not supported, but Windows-Users could install a virtualbox
and install an Ubuntu system inside it, for example.
2. Install git (for example see https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git)
3. Clone the respository called "notebooks" and the repository called "hypercc". The third repository of the project, "hyper-canny", and software to handle the workflow (called "noodles") are downloaded automatically when following the instructions further.

4. Python: The software is based on python3.5 (python 3.5.6 is known to work). Other versions of python (even newer
ones like python 3.6) can lead to errors. It is therefore advised to use Python 3.5 from the start.
To this end, it is helpful to use a software that allows switching between python versions in order to keep other
software unaffected, and to create and then activate a virtual environment before using the edge detector.
A very useful software to do both is pyenv. To install it follow these instructions:

Before creating the virtual environment with pyenv, one needs to install the packages tk and tk-dev
(problems with tkinter have been encountered if this is not done):
For example, for Ubuntu / Debian type:
apt install tk
apt install tk-dev
Make sure that the correct path to the python executable and libraries are set (e.g. in .bashrc), and that the
commands pip and python refer to the correct python version (for example, pip can sometimes refer to Python 2
instead of Python 3, which would make it necessary to type pip3 instead of pip, or set an alias in the .bashrc)
5. Install libraries:
In Ubuntu / Debian: apt install g++ proj-bin libproj-dev libgeos-dev
Fedora: dnf install gcc-c++ geos-devel proj-devel
6. Install numpy by typing:
pip install numpy
7. Go to the notebooks folder that has been cloned from github. There is a file called requirements.txt.
This can be used to install needed software by typing:
pip install -r requirements.txt
8. Having cloned hypercc from github as explained above, to install it, go into the hypercc folder, and type
pip install --upgrade .
9. Install jupyter notebook by typing:
pip install jupyter
10. One can now use jupyter to open and run a notebook from the folder "notebooks", or use hypercc from the terminal to scan climate model output from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project CMIP5.
To start jupyter, type
jupyter notebook
To scan a large amount of files automatically, e.g. climate model output from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project CMIP5, use hypercc from the terminal by editing and running the ksh script in hypercc/scripts.
The syntax and list of possible parameters for using hypercc from the terminal can be obtained with
./hypercc --help
and additional input parameters with
./hypercc report --help
