What is the recommended way of writing Design Documents?

I looked through the docs and did some Google searches but I can't find any mentions of some tool that helps when writing design documents.
It seems a little bit shaky to just write the functions as strings directly into the json objects so is there some kind of text editor integration or stand alone tool to help with writing design documents?
