Executable missing from Github Zip file #29
Comments
Duplicate of #13 |
Looks like you have downloaded the source code zip file. Check out the Releases section and download a full copy of the application from there. Latest version - https://github.com/garethflowers/atom-portable/releases/download/v1.38.2/AtomPortable_1.38.2.zip |
To whom it may concern:
"Looks like you have downloaded the source code zip file."No! There was no source code in the download so it was not from the source code download section. The download I got was a subset of the Release download link you sent.
The way the page is organized causes users to think they are getting the current release. I have downloaded from GitHub many times before and not seen this type of organization. Since my bug submission was actually a duplicate (the duplicate was not revealed to me when making my submission), it is further proof that the organization of the page is causing users to expect they are downloading the current release.
I don't even see the point of that download I got since it does not contain source code, nor does it contain the current release.
As a User Interface Design Engineer for many years, I suggest someone rethink how that page is organized, or change what is downloaded. A readme.txt/readme.md file in the download would help clarify to any users what they have downloaded, and if it is not what they expected, where to find what they expected, be it source code, or the current release.

The Windows OS portable edition of Atom should operate without Portable Apps (as it is optional). I have several other "portable" Apps installed and working on an external hard-drive without using Portable Apps (I do use Portable Apps on a separate thumbdrive).
I download a Zip file from Github, then opened the Zipfile and copied the contents of atom-portable-master.zip, atom-portable-master folder (AtomPortable) to G:\_Editors\AtomPortable. That folder contains the file AtomPortable.exe.
When I double-click on AtomPortable.exe, I get a dialog stating:
Atom Portable cannot be started. You may wish to re-install to fix this issue. (ERROR: App\Atom\atom.exe could not be found)
I looked in the G:\_Editors\AtomPortable\App folder, and there is not an Atom folder. Atom.exe does not exist in any of the folders under G:\_Editors\AtomPortable.
