Using glue to embed a URL

I have a python variable that I want to use to create a link in the HTML. I tried to do it like this:

glue("url", file_url, display=False)

And then, in a markdown cell:

The file is [here]({glue:text}`url`).

This doesn't work. I assume you can't just glue something inside a markdown link. Is it possible to achieve this some other way?

If I recall, in jupyter book 1, it is not possible to insert only the link via MyST substitutions. You'd have to define the entire markdown link syntax and insert that.

Jupyter Book 2 is built with the MyST document engine and variable substitution is currently on the list of enhancements to make. I'll drop a link below and it would be really helpful to provide suggestions and support in that issue

Thanks @choldgraf. I may have misunderstood you, but whatever string I glue appears to be rendered directly, without any HTML interpretation. The special characters are getting escaped, so something like "<a href>" just gets displayed directly on the page rather than creating a link.

I'll add my use case to the issue you provided.
