XFCE 22.1 b - xorg / x11 desktop does not start after entering password at lock screen

I am running Linux Mint 22.1 beta XFCE on bare metal.
It starts OK and I can use it but when I enable the lock screen and then try to get back in by typing the password at the lock screen, the desktop does not start and all I see is a black screen with the mouse pointer.
Does anyone know how to get the desktop back?
