We have prototypes showing it can be emulated looking similar but much faster:

Branch "GradientShadows" has a prototype for circles (BlGradientShadowEffect).
Prototypes with linear shadows and masks: https://github.com/pharo-graphics/BlocBenchs/blob/master/src/BlocBenchs-Alexandrie/AeBenchBlurRectangleRunner.class.st
Original prototype: AeCairoGradientShadowFilter
