Help with redirect/alias to different directory

Description

I have a directory blogs/obsidian with a lot of directories/index.qmd files that show up at https://site/blogs/obsidian/some-post. I'm trying to use aliases to redirect from an old location at https://site/blogs/some-post.

I have used aliases successfully to add a different page name in the same path/url, but I can't figure out the syntax to use to reference another path/url, and the documentation doesn't show how to do this. Maybe it isn't possible?

Sorry but your request is currently very abstract making it difficult to understand what you want to do exactly.

Be sure to read the documentation on the simple helper provided by Quarto: https://quarto.org/docs/websites/website-navigation.html#redirects

Note that this simple feature might not be enough in your case and if that is the case, then you must rely on usual web redirection.

At my current website, I have, for example https://biscotty.online/blogs/gpx-gps-data. In my new site, this will actually live at https://biscotty.online/blogs/data-science/gpx-gps-data, but I would like that people using the old address are re-directed to the new one. I'm using generic index.qmd files.

As you can see, I do not need to give it an alias file name, but an alias file path. The documentation only shows how to give another name, which works fine, but it doesn't help me because I need to alias another path, not the current one. My naive attempts at something like:

aliases:
  - blogs/gpx-gps-data

or

aliases:
  - ../gpx-gps-data

just land me at my 404 page.

The simplest way to do this is to replace your old page with a simple HTML document that includes a client-side meta redirect tag

That works, thanks. A lot of clutter, sadly, with dozens of files, but it works.

There's a way to cut back on that clutter but I ran into a separate Quarto bug. Check back on this thread.

Since the files are html anyway, would it hurt to put them directly in the "docs" folder (the folder where my output is generated to)? At least it would leave my source cleaner.

"docs" is erased at every render to ensure there are no outdated files.
You need to create them next to your source files and add them as "resources".
