Transitime Overview

Transitime is an open-source real-time transit information system. It combines readily available GPS data and GTFS data to provide real-time arrival information such as "next bus is in 5 minutes". It also provides management tools so that a transit agency can more effectively management their system.

The goal of the system is to provide superior functionality, and not just be an open-source version of any other system. It is designed to provide the most accurate predictions possible, even in a complicated large city environment. It is also intended to work for very large systems (more than a thousand vehicles), including those in developing countries.

The emphasis of Transitime is on the backend and in creating useful information that is made available through an extensive API. The goal is to feed the many good smartphone applications that are already available but that need a more accurate source of predicted arrival time data. A Transitime web based interface is available to demonstrate the functionality of the system. It is expected that in the future the web interface will be significantly more developed.

The system contains a great deal of functionality. In addition, each transit agency operates differently. Because of this complexity, a Transitime system is not easy to setup to run optimally. A production worthy implementation can be created and supported by Transitime, or by others who have extensive extensive experience with large open-source projects.
