Apple-180Hz-LED-Cinema-Display

Fitting a LG Ultragear 27GP850-B (1440p 180Hz) monitor inside an 27" Apple LED Cinema Display while preserving most of the original Apple aesthetics.

Unlike the original Apple LED Cinema Display, this verion has a full size DisplayPort and HDMI input. The Magsafe 1 connector is also removed.

Final Result

From the front, the monitor looks like a regular Apple Cinema Display.

The rear of the monitor is very similar to the original Apple Cinema Display.

It is possible to have DisplayPort and HDMI connected at the same time.

While the DisplayPort, HDMI and DC Power are connected in the original power socket, the navigation joystick is accessible using the hole below.

Almost all of the internal components are removed.

Next, disassembly of the LG Ultragear 27GP850-B monitor.

The rear plastic panel is removed by unclipping it along the outer edges.

The driver board is removed from the assembly.

The LG monitor fits inside the Apple Cinema Display enclosure.

The front plastic bezel is removed from the LG monitor in order to create a flush mount.

Assembly

An aluminium bracket is created to hold the DisplayPort, HDMI and DC Power sockets.

The bracket surface is covered by a black tape, which is then cut to expose the sockets.

The bracket assembly is secured inside the Apple Cinema Display enclosure along with the navigational joystick.

Screws are glued in to place, with nuts on the correct height to secure the driver board to the enclosure.

The LG panel is adhered to the Apple Cinema Display brackets.

The final assembly begins, and all connectors are put in place.

By using the Apple Cinema Display as an enclosure, the bezels are increased from 5mm to 24mm.

Result

The front glass is put back on, and the monitor is ready to be used.

The rear ports are accessible through the original AC power socket.

The original LG power plug is replaced by a nicer looking, more common size plug.
